While Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers a vast open world, the initial experience is quite linear. During the game's prologue, which lasts about 90 minutes, players will alternate between Naoe and Yasuke at designated points. After completing the prologue, players remain locked as Naoe for several hours.

Unfortunately, those eager to dive straight into the Samurai experience will need to wait. Naoe is the sole playable character until nearly the end of the game's first act. The early game focuses entirely on her, with Yasuke absent until the Temple of the Horseman Quest. He becomes playable briefly during the Fire and Lightning Quest. Once Act I is completed, players gain the freedom to switch between the two protagonists more freely.

How Long Does it Take to Unlock Protagonist Switching in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

In my playthrough, it took about 10 hours to reach the end of Act I and unlock the ability to switch between protagonists freely. This duration included engaging in various side content. For players focused solely on the main storyline, reaching this point could take approximately 6 to 8 hours.

Once the ability to switch between Naoe and Yasuke is unlocked, it's straightforward. Players can switch characters by fast traveling to different locations on the map. When selecting a fast travel point, there are two options: one to fast travel as the current character and another to switch to the other protagonist upon arrival. This method works for various locations, including Synchronization points and Kakurega Hideouts.

Additionally, during certain story quests, players may be given the option to choose which protagonist to control.

While players enjoy significant freedom in choosing their preferred protagonist after Act I, there are specific story moments and major quests where the character is locked.
