Dragon Quest 12 continues to be a work in progress, with series creator Yuji Horii reassuring fans that information will be shared gradually. During a livestream with his radio show group KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii emphasized that the development team at Square Enix is diligently working on the game. This update marks the first significant news since May 2024, when Horii acknowledged the passing of Dragon Quest's iconic character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. Additionally, the series' lead producer, Yu Miyake, had transitioned to lead Square Enix's mobile game division by that time.
Amidst restructuring at Square Enix and a period of silence, fans had worried about the possibility of Dragon Quest 12 being canceled. However, Horii's recent comments dispel these concerns, confirming that the project remains active.
All we have seen of Dragon Quest 12 so far is its logo, unveiled back in 2021. Announced as part of the series' 35th anniversary celebration, it promises to be the first mainline entry since Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, released in 2017.
In other news, Square Enix reported that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has exceeded sales expectations, having sold 2 million copies. This success underscores the enduring popularity of the Dragon Quest franchise and adds to the anticipation for Dragon Quest 12.
