Zach Braff Joins Cast for Confirmed Scrubs Reboot

by Max Jun 27,2025

In the world of television, it seems nothing stays gone forever. This year alone has seen a resurgence of beloved universes ranging from *The Office* to *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, and now, the cherished 2000s medical comedy *Scrubs* is set to make its way back into production.

It's been 24 years since Zach Braff first stepped into the scrubs of J.D., the idealistic young doctor navigating the chaotic halls of Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, Braff is officially returning to reprise his iconic role in ABC’s upcoming *Scrubs* reboot. The new series is expected to blend fresh talent with familiar faces, offering fans both nostalgia and something new.

If this concept feels somewhat familiar, that’s because ABC previously attempted a similar approach during what became the controversial ninth season of *Scrubs*. That season saw Braff and other original cast members gradually pass the torch to a younger ensemble. Unfortunately, the experiment didn’t resonate with audiences and was canceled after only nine episodes.

Now, nearly two decades later, the network is giving it another shot. This revival is being spearheaded by *Scrubs*’ original creator, Bill Lawrence, who envisions the project as a hybrid reboot and revival. With Braff already on board, reports from *Entertainment Weekly* suggest that more original cast members are likely to join him.

In a previous interview with *Deadline*, Lawrence hinted at the creative direction behind the return:

"We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling."

The original *Scrubs* series aired 182 episodes between 2001 and 2010, leaving a lasting legacy in the sitcom genre. While no official filming dates have been announced yet, fans are eagerly awaiting further updates on the future of Sacred Heart Hospital.
