Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Historical Roots and Innovations

by Connor Jan 23,2025

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Blend of History and InnovationSandfall Interactive's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently unveiled key details about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, revealing its historical inspirations and innovative gameplay mechanics. This article delves into the game's rich background and unique battle system.

Historical Influences and Gameplay Revolution

Name and Narrative Origins

In a July 29th interview, Broche shed light on the real-world sources that shaped *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33*'s title and storyline.

The game's name, "Clair Obscur," draws inspiration from a 17th- and 18th-century French artistic and cultural movement, influencing both the game's visual style and overarching world. "Expedition 33" refers to a series of expeditions led by protagonist Gustave to defeat the Paintress, a being who uses a monolith to erase entire generations – a process Broche calls "the Gommage." The reveal trailer depicts the death of Gustave's partner after the Paintress targets age 33.

Broche cited La Horde du Contrevent (a fantasy novel about explorers) and Attack on Titan (for its theme of facing insurmountable odds) as narrative influences.

A Modern Take on Turn-Based RPGs

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Blend of History and InnovationBroche highlighted the game's commitment to high-fidelity graphics in a genre often lacking visual polish: "There's been a gap in the market for a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. We aimed to fill that void."

While acknowledging predecessors like Valkyria Chronicles and Project X Zone, Clair Obscur introduces a reactive turn-based combat system. Broche explains, "You strategize during your turn, but must react in real-time to enemy attacks during theirs – dodging, jumping, or parrying to unleash powerful counters." The inspiration for this system? Action games like the Souls series, Devil May Cry, and NieR, bringing their rewarding combat feel to a turn-based setting.

Looking Ahead

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Blend of History and InnovationBroche's insights reveal a game steeped in historical context, yet pushing boundaries with its innovative gameplay. The combination of high-fidelity visuals and a reactive battle system promises a fresh take on the turn-based RPG. Players will need to carefully plan their actions, while simultaneously reacting to enemy attacks in real-time.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025. Broche concludes, "We're thrilled by the positive response and can't wait to share more before launch."
