George R.R. Martin Praises 'Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' as Faithful Adaptation

by Scarlett Mar 29,2025

George R.R. Martin, the renowned author behind "A Song of Ice and Fire," has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," describing it as "as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for." In his latest blog post, Martin shared that the six-episode series has completed production at HBO and is slated for a release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his sentiments towards previous spin-offs, Martin is particularly fond of this new series.

Martin has had the opportunity to view all six episodes, with the final two seen in rough cuts, and he is effusive in his praise. "Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible," he stated. He also highlighted the rest of the cast, mentioning the excitement viewers will feel upon meeting characters like the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" adapts "The Hedge Knight," the first of the novellas centered around Dunk and Egg.

While the series promises a thrilling fight scene, Martin cautioned that fans looking for intense action might be disappointed. "There’s a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers," he explained. Instead, the series focuses on themes of duty, honor, and chivalry, presenting a character-driven narrative.

The show stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen, known affectionately as Dunk and Egg. Although the release is still months away, HBO has already released some promotional images and a teaser trailer to build anticipation.

In his concluding remarks, Martin touched on his ongoing projects, mentioning the next installment in the Dunk and Egg series, "The Sworn Sword," and his much-anticipated novel, "The Winds of Winter." He humorously acknowledged the reminders he is likely to receive from fans about completing these works. "Meanwhile, we’ll be moving on to 'The Sworn Sword,' the second tale of Dunk & Egg. And once I finish The Winds of Winter, I will need to get hopping on 'The Village Hero,' and all the other tales that await the lads. Don’t worry, I am sure you folks will remind me."
