Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Hints at Nintendo Switch 2 with Cake Image

by Julian Apr 13,2025

It's been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight. Over these years, fans have experienced a rollercoaster of anticipation with Silksong appearing and disappearing at various events. At one point, Microsoft even hinted at a launch before June 2023, yet The Game Awards came and went without any Silksong news. However, could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally bring the news fans have been waiting for?

The speculation is fueled by a seemingly innocuous picture of a cake. Here's how it unfolded:

Dedicated fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to an image of a chocolate cake. Pellen tweeted: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

At the time, rumors suggested Nintendo would unveil the Switch 2 on January 16, which turned out to be true. Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 that day, though many questions about the next-gen console remain unanswered. Was Pellen hinting at the Switch 2 reveal with his tweet? If so, why?

This sparked a frenzy among the Hollow Knight community, leading to some intriguing detective work. Fans reverse-searched the cake image, which led them to a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake on Bon Appétit, published on April 2, 2024.

Why is this date significant? Because Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 will air on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Fans believe Pellen's tweet and the cake image are part of a Silksong alternate reality game (ARG).

The investigation didn't stop there. Fans are now trying to decipher Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. Redditor Representative-True proposed an interesting theory: "The character limit on Twitter handles is 15 characters, which is the length of ‘everydruidwaswr.’ I think 'wr' is likely the start of a word, like wrong or something. I have yet to decipher this, but the Druid of the Moss Temple is a Silksong NPC."

Adding to the mystery, Pellen's new X/Twitter name is "little bomey." Fans have pointed out that Little Boomey is a wine from Southern Australia, where Team Cherry is based, though the spelling differs. What could this signify?

It's important to recall that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced, Team Cherry confirmed launch platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Hollow Knight: Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this just the wild speculation of fans desperate for news?

We'll find out in a few months. In the meantime, be sure to check out everything announced at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
