The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation's Biggest Change

Following the precedent set by the novelization, Marvel's comic adaptation expands the film's narrative with additional material. Issue #5 contains multiple significant alterations, including visuals of Lando's galaxy-wide broadcast rallying allies against the Sith Eternal fleet, and intimate Force-bond conversations between Rey and Ben Solo.

The most transformative change occurs during Rey's climactic confrontation with Emperor Palpatine on Exegol. While the film version featured disembodied Jedi voices inspiring Rey, the comic physically depicts these fallen warriors appearing as Force Ghosts:

This visually stunning moment addresses longstanding fan disappointment with the film's voice-only approach. Though coordinating live-action cameos would have been logistically challenging, the comic's interpretation creates a more powerfully cinematic moment.

The issue also inserts previously unseen Force Ghost appearances during the victory celebration on Ajan Kloss, where Luke and Leia share a heartfelt sibling moment:

These additions compensate for limitations imposed by Carrie Fisher's passing, expanding Leia's narrative presence beyond what the film could achieve.

The Mystery of Ahsoka Tano

While the Force Ghost sequence delivers fan-requested spectacle, it raises continuity questions. Several prequel-era Jedi appear despite established lore restricting Force Ghost manifestation to specially trained individuals like Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda and Obi-Wan.

The scene also presents inconsistencies regarding character appearances - why does Clone Wars-era Obi-Wan manifest rather than his original trilogy likeness? Most intriguing is Ahsoka Tano's inclusion, given her ambiguous canonical status during the sequel trilogy era.

Is Ahsoka's presence confirmation of her demise, or could she be projecting herself like Luke did in The Last Jedi? With Rosario Dawson slated to reprise the role in upcoming Star Wars projects, Lucasfilm may postpone clarifying Ahsoka's ultimate fate.
