Mask Around is the sequel to one of the strangest roguelikes of all time

by Skylar Dec 10,2024

Mask Around: The sequel to the bizarre 2020 hit, Mask Up, is here! This time, prepare for a blend of run-and-gun action and intense brawling. The iconic yellow ooze returns, but with some unexpected new gameplay twists.

For those unfamiliar, Mask Up was a unique roguelike platformer where you evolved from a simple puddle of yellow goo into a powerful, well, buff puddle of goo. Developer Rouli has once again delivered the strange and wonderful with Mask Around.

Unlike its predecessor, which focused primarily on 2D brawling, Mask Around incorporates 2D shooting mechanics. You can seamlessly switch between gunning down enemies and unleashing your goo-based melee attacks. However, this precious yellow ooze remains a limited resource, requiring careful management, especially during challenging boss fights.

Strategic Goo Management

Mask Around is currently available on Google Play, with no iOS release announced yet. While I haven't played the original, Mask Around appears to be a significant improvement, building upon the original gameplay while adding substantial depth. The challenge now lies not only in maintaining your ooze supply, but also in strategically choosing when to use it, alongside your newly acquired weaponry. The visuals have also received a welcome polish.
