Mortal Kombat 1's Ed Boon Hints at Future DLC Following T-1000 Reveal
Ed Boon, the creative director behind Mortal Kombat 1, recently shared a sneak peek of the upcoming T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, simultaneously teasing future downloadable content (DLC). This announcement coincided with the release of the Conan the Barbarian guest character and the revelation that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold.
Boon tweeted a short video showcasing one of the T-1000's fatalities, a scene reminiscent of the iconic truck chase in Terminator 2. The accompanying tweet, however, sparked considerable speculation within the Mortal Kombat community. His statement, "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!", fueled anticipation for additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion.
The T-1000 marks the final character in the Khaos Reigns DLC, following the additions of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan. The ambiguity of Boon's statement has led fans to wonder if a third DLC pack or Kombat Pack 3 is in the works, particularly given the game's strong sales performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery's continued investment in the Mortal Kombat franchise further supports this possibility. CEO David Zaslav recently stated the company intends to focus heavily on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Adding to the intrigue, Boon previously confirmed that NetherRealm had already decided on its next project three years prior, while promising extended support for Mortal Kombat 1.
While many speculate NetherRealm's next title will be a third installment in the Injustice fighting game franchise, this remains unconfirmed. The development history of both franchises, marked by alternating releases, was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a new Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1, compared to Unreal Engine 3 for Mortal Kombat 11). Boon himself acknowledged these factors as influencing the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game before returning to the Injustice series, explicitly stating that the Injustice franchise is not closed off.
The speculation surrounding future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 continues, leaving fans eagerly awaiting further announcements from NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Discovery.
