Sony addressed the nearly day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further specifics regarding the cause or preventative measures.
To compensate PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony will automatically add five extra days to their subscriptions.
Gamers experienced widespread disruptions throughout the outage. Over one-third were unable to log in, while others reported server crashes impacting gameplay.
Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games, has drawn criticism, and this outage highlights those concerns.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. A significant data breach in April 2011 resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent incident has left PS5 users frustrated by Sony's limited communication.
