Pokémon TCG Pocket Devs Looking to Improve Trading Following Major Player Backlash

by Allison Feb 20,2025

Pokémon TCG Pocket's trading feature, launched last week, has faced significant player backlash, prompting developer Creatures Inc. to address concerns. In a statement on X/Twitter, Creatures Inc. acknowledged the negative feedback, explaining that the restrictive trading mechanics—including Trade Tokens—were intended to prevent bot abuse and maintain a fair playing environment. However, they admitted these restrictions inadvertently hinder casual enjoyment.

The developer promised to alleviate issues by offering Trade Tokens as rewards in future events, a promise immediately broken with the February 3rd Cresselia ex Drop Event lacking any such rewards.

Creatures Inc.'s statement, while acknowledging player concerns, remains vague regarding specific changes and timelines. The company hasn't clarified whether existing trades will be refunded or compensated for should the Trade Token system be altered.

The limited availability of Trade Tokens further fuels player criticism. Only 200 were offered as premium Battle Pass rewards (a $9.99 monthly subscription), sufficient for trading a single 3-Diamond card. The absence of Trade Tokens in the Cresselia ex event directly contradicts the developer's recent pledge.

Many players perceive the trading mechanics as a revenue-generating tactic, particularly given the game's estimated $200 million revenue in its first month (before trading). The inability to trade cards of 2-Star rarity or higher reinforces this suspicion, as readily trading would reduce the need for in-app purchases. One player reported spending approximately $1,500 to complete the first set.

The community's response has been overwhelmingly negative, with players labeling the trading system "predatory," "toxic," and a "monumental failure." Creatures Inc. faces significant pressure to revise the trading system and restore player trust.
