Travis Willingham: Critical Role Game Announcement Imminent

by Matthew Apr 28,2025

The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham teasing that an announcement could be imminent, stating it could happen "any day." This exciting news was shared during an interview with Business Insider. Although the name of the game and its specific connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Willingham described the upcoming video game as an interactive experience where players will have the power to steer the narrative and explore new possibilities within the world of Exandria. This promises to be a thrilling addition to the Critical Role universe, allowing fans to engage with both familiar and new characters in unprecedented ways.

Travis Willingham, not only the CEO but also a star of the show, co-founded Critical Role alongside other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. The D&D show has evolved into a comprehensive universe, with notable expansions including the successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game is poised to be a standalone project within the Critical Role ecosystem. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of developing this game, indicating that they were nearing the end of a multi-year journey. It remains to be seen whether the game will follow one of the show's campaigns or introduce a new story within the Exandria world.

Originally, the team hoped to make an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. As we progress into 2025, the anticipation for an announcement grows. Willingham noted to Rolling Stone that their past collaborations were exploratory, hinting at the complexities and challenges within the gaming industry. He emphasized the need for strategic planning to find their place within the broader gaming ecosystem.

While no release date has been set for the Critical Role video game, fans can look forward to updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
