Unveiling the Top Switch Visual Novels and Adventure Gems for 2024

by Ethan Feb 10,2025

Following my exploration of the Switch's top party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This includes both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements, representing a diverse range of regions and release years. The order is entirely arbitrary.

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection

Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Now, in 2024, Emio – The Smiling Man arrives as a stunning new entry, both physically and digitally. This lavish production feels like a genuine sequel, though some may find that a drawback. The shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. Unexpectedly, it's a top contender for my game of the year. Download the demo! For those preferring to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to love.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)

A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A remains a personal favorite. Its compelling story, memorable music, captivating aesthetic, and especially its characters make it a standout. The Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives.

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)

The definitive edition of The House in Fata Morgana is a storytelling masterpiece. This pure visual novel, enhanced with additional content, shines brightest on the Switch. Prepare for a gothic horror experience that will linger long after the credits roll. The music is simply breathtaking.

Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)

While sold separately on the eShop, a North American Switch bundle exists, so I'm treating both Coffee Talk games as one entry. Though not reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk provides a wonderfully relaxing experience with a charming story, excellent pixel art, and a great soundtrack. Ideal for coffee lovers who appreciate engaging characters.

Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)

This entry encompasses Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo), and the recently released Fate/stay night Remastered. All are lengthy but rewarding. For newcomers to visual novels, Fate/stay night is a good starting point, but Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows these two in terms of quality.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)

Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT surprised me with its exceptional quality. The narrative, presentation, and even the meta-elements are captivating. This mystery adventure game features memorable characters, stunning art, and engaging mechanics. A must-play for horror adventure fans.

Gnosia ($24.99)

Often categorized as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. Identify the Gnosia among your crew and vote to put them into cold sleep. Despite some RNG-related limitations, it's a fantastic experience.

Steins;Gate Series (Variable)

Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I hope the original version arrives on Switch, Steins;Gate Elite is an excellent entry point for anime fans. Playing the other Steins;Gate titles is recommended after experiencing the original story.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)

The collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki resulted in two exceptional adventure games. While the absence of Zero Escape on Switch is lamented, the AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES games are well worth the price.

NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)

This adventure game, with its shifting tone between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments, follows a young streamer's daily life. Its multiple endings and unpredictable nature make it a truly unforgettable experience.

Ace Attorney Series (Variable)

Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The sheer volume of content makes it a must-have for adventure game fans. For newcomers, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a strong starting point.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)

The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While its grotesque imagery might not appeal to all, its excellent localization and storytelling make it a memorable experience.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)

While not a pure adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim incorporates real-time strategy battles. This sci-fi masterpiece is a must-play, offering a compelling narrative and engaging gameplay.

This list exceeds a typical "top 10" because I couldn't bear to exclude any of these favorites. If you have suggestions, please share them in the comments. I'm always seeking exceptional stories in these genres. Thanks for reading! (Note: A separate list of otome games is in the works.)
