To unlock the crafting recipes necessary for upgrading weapons in *Atomfall*, you first need to acquire the Gunsmithing skill. This crucial survival skill requires you to read the Crafting Manual. While finding these skill-related books can be challenging, there's a straightforward method to obtain this one.

Morris Wick, located at the Village Shop in Wyndham, possesses a copy of the Crafting Manual. However, acquiring it isn't as simple as trading goods. You'll need to engage in some blackmail and bartering to get it. Upon entering St. Katherine's Church, you'll uncover dialogue about the recent murder of Maisie and the Vicar's desire to cover it up. Further investigation will lead you to evidence implicating Morris in the crime. This evidence can be found in the Brewery Cellar at coordinates 30.5 E, 80.5 N in the west of Wyndham Village. Enter through the cellar door by the ruined building and search for the note titled "Kill the One They Call Maisie".

Once you have the note, return to Morris' Village Shop at 33.3 E, 79.9 N. Engage in dialogue that pressures Morris without outright threatening him until you reach the "Bargaining" option. Selecting this will prompt Morris to hand over the Crafting Manual in exchange for your silence about his crime.

Alternatively, you can find the Crafting Manual in the D Section of The Interchange, though this method is more time-consuming and challenging.

After obtaining and reading the Crafting Manual, you'll need to spend 7 Training Stimulants to unlock the Gunsmith skill, which will grant you access to the recipes for crafting upgraded weapons. These stimulants can be found in B.A.R.D. structures like Bunkers and The Interchange.

With the Crafting Manual and the Gunsmith skill in hand, you'll have access to recipes for crafting weapon upgrades. When you acquire a weapon, you unlock the recipe to craft its next highest tier, progressing from Rusty to Stock, and finally to Pristine. To upgrade a weapon, you'll need two of the same weapon in the previous tier, along with a specific amount of Gun Oil and Scrap, which can vary depending on the weapon.

For instance, upgrading the Falkirk Battle Rifle to Pristine requires 2 Falkirk Battle Rifle (Stock) items, 3 Gun Oil, and 6 Scrap. These materials are most commonly found at military installations like Protocol Camps. If you plan on frequently upgrading weapons, consider investing in the Deep Pockets survival skill to carry more crafting supplies.

Upgrading a weapon to Pristine for the first time will reward you with the 'Make do and mend' Achievement or Trophy.
