Videogame Icon Atari Acquires Another Entity

Atari's subsidiary, Infogrames, has acquired the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild Inc., marking a significant move in Atari's ongoing revitalization strategy. Infogrames, relaunched as a label dedicated to titles outside Atari's core lineup, inherits a franchise renowned for its darkly humorous and unconventional gameplay. This acquisition underscores Atari's commitment to expanding its digital and physical distribution channels, and developing new sequels and collections.

The Infogrames label, a name synonymous with gaming in the 80s and 90s (responsible for titles like Alone in the Dark, Backyard Baseball, and the Putt-Putt series), was revived after Atari's 2013 bankruptcy. This strategic move follows Atari's recent acquisition of Totally Reliable Delivery Service, further bolstering its portfolio.

Infogrames Manager Geoffroy Châteauvieux highlighted the enduring appeal of Surgeon Simulator, emphasizing the opportunity to acquire a timeless franchise. The game, originally released in 2013, has since expanded to various platforms, including iOS, Android, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, showcasing its broad appeal. While a sequel hasn't been announced, the acquisition suggests future installments are a possibility.

The Surgeon Simulator franchise, known for its unique blend of dark humor and chaotic gameplay, features the inept surgeon Nigel Burke and his patient, "Bob." The game's success spans multiple platforms and versions, including a VR iteration and a cooperative sequel, Surgeon Simulator 2. This acquisition represents a key step in Atari's aggressive acquisition strategy and its broader efforts to re-establish itself as a major player in the gaming industry.
