Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development

Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel to the iconic game. His recent X (formerly Twitter) poll indicates a strong preference for a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.

A Poll Reveals Fan Desire

On January 1st, Notch posted a poll asking fans which of two projects he should prioritize: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid, or a new game reminiscent of Minecraft. The latter overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response reflects the enduring popularity of the original Minecraft, which boasts millions of daily players worldwide.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially announced Minecraft 2. He expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his creative passion, acknowledging the strong fan desire for a similar experience. He emphasized that while he's open to developing either project, the overwhelming support for a Minecraft-inspired game makes it a strong contender.

Navigating IP Rights

It's important to note that Notch sold Minecraft's IP and Mojang Studios (the developer) to Microsoft in 2014. This means he can't directly create a game using the "Minecraft" name or existing assets without Microsoft's involvement. However, Notch assures fans that any new project would avoid infringing on Mojang's work, respecting their continued development and Microsoft's role.

Notch also acknowledged the inherent risks in creating a spiritual successor, admitting that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these concerns, the strong fan demand and potential financial success have influenced his decision to seriously consider a Minecraft-inspired game.

While awaiting Notch's potential new game, fans can anticipate upcoming Minecraft-themed attractions in the UK and US (2026 and 2027), as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
