Designing Absolute Batman
The Batman of the Absolute Universe stands out as a formidable figure, characterized by his hulking frame, shoulder spikes, and an array of enhancements to the classic Batsuit. This design has earned its place among the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta shared insights into crafting this imposing version of Batman, emphasizing the need to reflect a character who operates without the traditional wealth and resources.
“Scott's initial directive was to go big,” Dragotta explained to IGN. “We wanted to create the largest Batman ever seen, and Scott's vision was to amplify that even further, pushing towards almost Hulk-like proportions.”
Dragotta further elaborated, “The design embodies the theme of Batman as a weapon. Every element, from his emblem to his suit, is designed to be a tool of intimidation and utility. This concept will continue to evolve and shape his appearance in future issues.”
For Snyder, the necessity to make Batman larger than life stemmed from the need to compensate for the absence of his traditional superpower—immense wealth. “In the classic Batman narrative, his wealth is a significant factor in his intimidation factor. Without it, this Batman relies on his physical presence and the sheer utility of his suit to confront Gotham’s criminal underworld,” Snyder remarked.
The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident in Absolute Batman, particularly in a striking homage in issue #6. Dragotta acknowledged the inspiration, stating, “Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's work on Batman has been a major influence, especially in storytelling and layout. Paying homage to Miller’s iconic Dark Knight Returns cover felt right and necessary.”
Giving Batman a Family
Absolute Batman introduces profound changes to the character's mythology, notably by revealing that Bruce's mother, Martha, is alive. This development transforms Batman from a solitary figure into someone with more at stake, adding layers of vulnerability and strength to his character.
Snyder shared his initial hesitations and eventual conviction about this plot point, saying, “Introducing Martha felt like the right choice to explore a different dynamic with Bruce's parents. Her presence adds a moral compass and a source of both strength and vulnerability, fundamentally altering Bruce's character.”
Additionally, the series reimagines Bruce's childhood friendships with future villains like Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. These relationships form the foundation of Bruce's journey to becoming Batman, with Snyder teasing further exploration of their influence in upcoming issues.
Absolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask ---------------------------------------In "The Zoo," Batman's presence in Gotham intensifies as he confronts a new generation of supervillains, with Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, taking center stage. As the leader of the Party Animals, Sionis embodies nihilism and hedonism, making him an unconventional yet fitting adversary for Batman's origin story.
Snyder explained the decision to revamp Black Mask, saying, “We saw potential in reshaping him into a character that embodies the chaos and nihilism of a world on the brink. His aesthetic and our approach allowed us to create a fresh take while staying true to his core as a crime boss.”
The climactic confrontation in issue #6 sees Batman storming Sionis' yacht, delivering a brutal beatdown that underscores Batman's underdog status in this universe. Snyder highlighted the significance of this fight, stating, “These lines encapsulate our Batman's essence—using the world's despair as fuel to drive change, even when faced with doubt.”
The Threat of Absolute Joker
The series is building towards a confrontation with the Absolute Joker, who embodies the opposite of Batman's principles. Introduced as a wealthy, worldly figure who never laughs, Joker is poised to challenge Batman's resolve and the very fabric of Gotham.
Snyder described the dynamic, saying, “In this inverted system, Batman disrupts the order while Joker represents the established system. Their relationship is integral to the series, with Joker already established as a terrifying force before meeting Batman.”
Dragotta added, “Joker's presence is felt throughout, with hints of his power and master plan. His storyline is set to unfold, adding depth to the narrative.”
What to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane ---------------------------------------------------------The series takes a detour in issues #7 and #8 with Marcos Martin introducing a chilling take on Mr. Freeze. Snyder expressed excitement about this arc, noting, “Mr. Freeze's story parallels Bruce's struggle with his friends and his survival, offering a dark and twisted perspective on the villain.”
As for Bane, Snyder teased, “He's not small. We wanted someone who makes Bruce's silhouette look smaller,” hinting at an imposing adversary that challenges Batman's physical dominance.
Looking ahead, the broader Absolute line, including titles like Absolute Wonder Woman, Absolute Superman, and new additions in 2025, promises interconnected narratives. Snyder hinted at future interactions, saying, “You'll see how these characters begin to affect each other in 2025, expanding the scope of our Absolute Universe.”
