The much-anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, is set to expand its universe beyond Night City to include a new setting described as a "Chicago gone wrong." This exciting development was shared by R. Talsorian Games founder and game designer Mike Pondsmith at Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20. Although Pondsmith isn't as deeply involved in the sequel as he was with the original, he remains closely connected, reviewing scripts and providing feedback on new elements like Cyberware. He expressed his enthusiasm for the new city, noting its unique atmosphere that diverges from the Blade Runner-esque feel of Night City, stating, "I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong."
CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has also been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2, with a recent job listing for a Lead Encounter Designer. This role is crucial for creating memorable and thrilling gameplay encounters and is involved in developing what aims to be the most realistic and reactive crowd system ever seen in gaming. While details about Project Orion remain sparse, the involvement of Pondsmith and the ambitious hiring by CDPR suggest a sequel that will build upon the rich world-building and storytelling of its predecessor.
New Footage for Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 Port
In related news, CDPR has released new footage showcasing Cyberpunk 2077's port to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The studio has worked diligently to optimize the game for the new handheld console, as evidenced by over 37 minutes of B-roll footage available on their website. However, during showcase events in New York and Paris earlier this year, reports highlighted performance issues, particularly with frame drops. Business Insider noted that while playing Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2 is a novelty, it's not the optimal way to experience the game due to these technical challenges.
Despite these concerns, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed satisfaction with the port's progress in a statement to Game File on April 25. He mentioned that the Switch 2's data storage speed has helped resolve early streaming problems, allowing the team to focus on further enhancements. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which includes the full base game, all updates, and the Phantom Liberty expansion, is scheduled for release on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025.
