This update comes directly from director Naoki Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase in a recent interview with Famitsu, ahead of the PC port launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Final Fantasy 7 Part 3’s Main Scenario Is Complete
In the interview, Hamaguchi confirmed that the development of the third game is progressing smoothly. "We began working on the title right after concluding FF7 Rebirth's development, and we are moving forward without any delays from our planned schedule," he stated. Kitase added that the main scenario for the third game was completed by the end of 2023. "I tasked Tetsuya Nomura with concluding the remake project while respecting the original and providing a satisfying end that wasn't felt in the original. That was finally completed at the end of the year," he explained. Kitase expressed confidence that the story will satisfy fans and provide a fitting conclusion to the trilogy.
Team Admits Initial Worries About Rebirth’s Release
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second installment in the remake series, was released in early 2024 to widespread acclaim. Despite its success, Kitase and Hamaguchi admitted to Famitsu that they were initially worried about how players would react to the game. "I was concerned about how it would resonate with players and game fans, given it was a remake and the second in a trilogy," Kitase said. However, the positive reception alleviated these concerns and boosted the team's confidence for the upcoming finale.
Hamaguchi credited the game's success to a "logic-based approach" to development, where they consider player feedback but prioritize what aligns with their vision. "If our goal is A, and we get an opinion like 'I want B instead,' we can't do anything about it as it is just someone's preference. However, if we get an opinion like 'If you added B too, wouldn't it be even better?' then I'll think about incorporating it, if possible," he explained in a separate interview with Automaton.
PC Gaming: The New Norm
The interview also touched on the growing trend of PC gaming. Kitase noted that the industry has shifted towards releasing games on PC to reach a broader audience, driven by rising development costs and the global availability of PCs. "As for PCs, there are no borders, so I think it's inevitable that PC versions will be released to allow more people to play," he said.
Hamaguchi added that the team prioritized the PC port of FF7 Rebirth to meet the changing demands of gamers. "The flow of game users in the world has changed a lot. That's why we focused on making the PC version of FFVII Rebirth available sooner than the PC version of FFVII Remake," he stated.
With the main story of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 now complete and development on schedule, fans can look forward to a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. The game may also see a quicker PC release, ensuring that players worldwide can experience the full Remake Project.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is now available on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5. For those yet to embark on this epic journey, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
