Marvel Rivals Bot Scandal Exposed

by Ethan Dec 10,2025

While Marvel Rivals dominates Steam and Twitch charts, player suspicions have grown regarding NetEase Games' use of bots in their popular hero shooter.

The superhero multiplayer game launched in December to widespread acclaim, praised for its dynamic gameplay and beloved characters like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and the recent Fantastic Four addition. Its success continues with hundreds of thousands of daily players on Steam. However, despite avoiding many pitfalls common to hero shooters, the developer faces increasing scrutiny over AI opponents appearing in standard gameplay modes.

"Playing against bots in Quickplay feels unsatisfying," one Reddit user expressed. "AI opponents should be confined to dedicated training modes."

While Marvel Rivals, like most modern multiplayer games, includes practice modes with adjustable AI difficulty, players report encountering bots in regular Quickplay matches. These reports describe suspiciously predictable bot behavior and teammates with similarly formatted names. Many suspect the system activates bot-filled matches after consecutive losses to prevent player frustration, though NetEase hasn't officially confirmed this.

"The lack of transparency about bot matches is frustrating," another player commented. "You can't tell if you're improving with a hero or just benefiting from artificial matchmaking."

Players have identified several indicators of bot lobbies, including repetitive movement patterns, restriction-labeled profiles, and name structures featuring single words in all caps or half-names. While some players welcome occasional bot matches as opportunities to complete achievements, others demand clearer matchmaking options.

"When you select Quickplay, NetEase doesn't give you a choice about bot matches," noted a community investigator who first documented the phenomenon.

This isn't new territory for multiplayer games - Fortnite players have debated similar bot implementations for years. Currently, the community remains divided between those wanting bot match options and others advocating for their complete removal from standard playlists.

As players continue investigating, NetEase moves forward with ambitious 2025 plans, starting with the Fantastic Four introduction in Season 1: Eternal Night Falls. The studio promises regular hero updates, including Spider-Man's Advanced Suit 2.0 arriving later this month.
