The Nintendo Switch 2 introduces a new feature called GameChat, which comes integrated into all consoles and is highlighted as a central aspect of the new system. However, setting up GameChat requires users to verify their identity by providing a phone number. If your Nintendo Account already has a linked phone number, that will be used. After submitting your number, Nintendo will send a verification text, linking your GameChat activities to this number. It's crucial to keep this in mind for responsible usage.
For users under 16, GameChat access is restricted until a parent or guardian enables it via the Parental Controls app. Additionally, they must provide their own phone number for verification. According to information spotted by Eurogamer on Nintendo's website, it seems that every Nintendo Account holder will need to go through this verification process when using a Switch 2, even on shared devices. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for further confirmation.
Accessing GameChat is straightforward—just press the new 'C' button on the Switch 2 controllers during gameplay. This feature supports video calls for up to four players and group audio calls for up to 24. Users can also use a separately sold camera peripheral to broadcast themselves and stream their gameplay, marking a first for Nintendo's traditionally family-oriented systems.

Recent insights from Digital Foundry have shed light on the Nintendo Switch 2's final specs, revealing concerns about GameChat's impact on system performance. Nintendo offers developers a GameChat testing tool that mimics API latency and L3 cache misses to simulate real-world usage without needing active sessions. This suggests that GameChat might affect system resources, though the exact impact on game performance remains uncertain until the console's release on June 5.
As a reminder, GameChat will be free to use for the first 10 months following the Switch 2's launch. After March 31, 2026, using GameChat will require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Recently, we've also seen the first look at a Switch 2 game cartridge and heard that Samsung might supply OLED screens for a potential Switch 2 upgrade.
