Insomniac Games Explores Further Game-to-Screen Adaptations

Insomniac Games, the renowned developer behind the Ratchet and Clank franchise, has expressed a keen interest in further adapting their games into movies. This revelation came from co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider during an interview with Variety, following the announcement of the retirement of the studio's founder and long-time CEO, Ted Price.

"I think back to the Ratchet and Clank film from several years ago. And we kind of got an early start on that. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular," Schneider stated. The 2016 Ratchet and Clank film, while receiving mixed reviews, has not deterred the studio's enthusiasm for future projects. With Insomniac's acquisition by Sony in 2019, the studio is optimistic about their prospects, buoyed by Sony's successful track record in game-to-screen adaptations, notably with the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series.

Sony's Expanding Portfolio of Video Game Adaptations

Sony has demonstrated its prowess in transforming video games into compelling films and TV series. Notable successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us TV series. At the recent CES 2025 press conference, Sony unveiled an exciting lineup of upcoming projects. The Last of Us Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO in April 2025, while an Until Dawn live-action film is slated for the same month. Additionally, a Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series will debut on Crunchyroll in 2027. Sony is also developing a Helldivers feature film and a Horizon Zero Dawn live-action film, though specific release dates for these projects have yet to be announced.

Insomniac Founder and CEO Ted Price Retires After 30 Years

In conjunction with the discussions about future adaptations, Insomniac's founder and CEO, Ted Price, announced his retirement after an illustrious 30-year career. Price, who has been instrumental in the creation of iconic franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, shared, "I actually made this decision last year. For me, after over 30 years of leading Insomniac, I felt it was simply time to step aside and let others pave the way for our team."

The leadership mantle will be taken up by three seasoned Insomniac veterans: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang, who will serve as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating, "I believe strongly that for us to continue our success, we need leaders at the top who are intimately familiar with how we do things, leaders who have helped build our culture and our processes, and who have earned people’s trust."
