Monster Hunter developers face a significant challenge: creating new weapon types for the series. This article delves into the complexities of weapon balancing and reveals details about the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration event.

Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Consider Adding a New Weapon Type

A 15th Weapon Type Remains a Possibility

For over a decade, the Monster Hunter (MH) series has featured the same 14 weapon types, the last addition being the Insect Glaive in Monster Hunter 4. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility of introducing a new weapon type. While the team is interested, Tokuda explained the considerable difficulty in designing a weapon that doesn't overly overlap with existing options. He stated that the resources and time required to perfectly integrate a new weapon are often better spent refining and enhancing the existing arsenal, ensuring a balanced and fresh experience. "It’s not off the table for any particular reason," Tokuda clarified, "it’s just that we never really decided that we wanted to for the recent titles."

Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Capcom continues to innovate, as evidenced by the introduction of features like Focus Mode and Power Clash in MH Wilds. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized a commitment to maintaining the core feel of each weapon type, stating, "We don’t want to change anything so drastically that it doesn’t feel like that weapon any more."

Tokuda also detailed the meticulous balancing process for each weapon in every title. He explained that Capcom establishes a core concept for each weapon's feel, but the true test comes from player feedback. He highlighted the challenges of balancing weapons in Wilds, particularly given the extensive additions made to Iceborne's weapon move sets. The team aimed to avoid simply carrying over features from the previous game, instead focusing on creating a cohesive and fresh experience in Wilds. "That was something that I took a lot of care to decide – not just to keep things because players liked it in the last game, but [ask if] it actually fits in with my concept for the play feel of this game," Tokuda emphasized.

To celebrate the upcoming release of MH Wilds, Monster Hunter Now will launch Phase 2 of its collaboration event on February 28, 2025. This phase will introduce the Chatacabra monster and 12 Hope weapons from MH Wilds, along with two new layered armors: a Hope armor style and a Seikret mount-themed armor. Players can also earn vouchers for in-game items redeemable in MH Wilds by completing limited-time quests.

In an February 18, 2025 press briefing for Season 5, Niantic Senior Producer Sakae Osumi hinted at future collaborations, stating, "This is the beginning of the collaboration between Monster Hunter Wilds and Monster Hunter Now, and we are planning to do more down the road. I would like to get more monsters from Wilds. We will work on it closely with Capcom."

Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
