Ninja Gaiden’s Revival is the Perfect Antidote to the Soulslike Phenomenon

by Allison Mar 05,2025

The 2025 Xbox Developer Direct brought many exciting announcements, but the Ninja Gaiden revival stands out as one of the biggest. The classic action franchise is getting multiple new games, including Ninja Gaiden 4 and a surprise shadow drop, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This marks a significant return for the series, absent a proper entry since Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge in 2012 (excluding the Master Collection compilation). This resurgence could signal a pivotal moment for gaming, potentially rebalancing the action genre after years of Soulslike dominance.

Once, titles like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, and the original God of War defined action gaming. However, FromSoftware's Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring shifted the landscape. While Soulslike games are excellent, the AAA market should accommodate diverse styles. Ninja Gaiden's return could be the much-needed equilibrium.

A Legacy of Dragons

The Ninja Gaiden series was once considered the apex of action games. The 2004 Xbox reboot, a departure from its 2D NES origins, established Ryu Hayabusa's adventures with fluid animation, smooth gameplay, and brutal difficulty. While other hack-and-slash titles existed, Ninja Gaiden's challenge was unparalleled, famously exemplified by the first boss, Murai.

Despite its difficulty, Ninja Gaiden's challenges are generally fair, stemming from player mistakes and a lack of mastery over combat mechanics. The game rewards skillful execution, utilizing tools like the Izuna Drop and Ultimate Techniques, along with mastering various weapon combos.

Interestingly, Ninja Gaiden's demanding gameplay foreshadowed the Soulslike phenomenon. Players' dedication to conquering its hardest difficulties influenced the mindset of Soulslike fans, seeking satisfaction from overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds. FromSoftware and its imitators refined this into a subgenre, but perhaps to an excess.

Following the Trend

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, a widely criticized PS3 port, coincided with Demon's Souls (2009). The latter's success paved the way for Dark Souls (2011), a landmark title frequently cited as one of the greatest games ever made. While Ninja Gaiden 3 and Razor's Edge struggled, Dark Souls significantly impacted the action market, spawning sequels and influencing Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring.

This Soulslike influence spread to other franchises, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Nioh, and Black Myth: Wukong. While Soulslike games are popular, their dominance has stifled the AAA action space, leaving classic 3D action games scarce. Devil May Cry 5 (2019) and the revised God of War (2018), while excellent, shifted away from their predecessors' fast-paced action. The newer God of War games, while not strictly Soulslike, share similarities.

Soulslike hallmarks – precise combat, stamina management, character builds, open-world design, and save points – are effective in FromSoftware's games, but widespread imitation has led to saturation. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black's release offers a chance to highlight the unique strengths of character action games.

The Master Ninja's Return

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black provides a refreshing change. Its fast-paced combat, diverse weapons, and the restoration of the original's gore (absent in Sigma 2) make it the best version on modern hardware. While some veterans might criticize difficulty adjustments, the original Ninja Gaiden II suffered from technical issues and unbalanced design. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black balances difficulty, reinstates gore, and retains much of Sigma 2's extra content (excluding disliked statue boss fights).

This remaster showcases what was lost when similar games became less prevalent. The frenetic, combo-based combat against numerous enemies and large bosses, presented linearly, is a proven formula. While similar mechanics still exist (e.g., Hi-Fi Rush), Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a significant example from a major developer.

Replaying Ninja Gaiden 2 Black emphasizes the unique appeal of such games. There are no shortcuts; no build guides, experience points, or stamina limitations. It's a pure test of skill, demanding mastery of the combat system.

While Soulslike games remain popular, Ninja Gaiden's return hopefully ushers in a new era for action games, catering to a diverse audience.
