Taiko (太鼓) encompasses a wide variety of Japanese percussion instruments. In Japan, the word "taiko" can refer to any drum, but internationally it is commonly understood to mean the traditional Japanese drums known as wadaiko (和太鼓, "Japanese drums") and the dynamic ensemble art form called kumi-daiko (組太鼓, "drum set"). Crafting a taiko drum varies by maker, with both the body and the skin requiring meticulous preparation—a process that can span years depending on the technique.

Taiko's roots are woven into Japanese mythology, though historical accounts indicate these drums came to Japan through Korean and Chinese influence around the 6th century CE. Certain taiko share similarities with instruments from India. Archaeological findings from the Kofun period further confirm taiko's presence in 6th-century Japan. Their roles have evolved over centuries, serving purposes from communication and warfare to theater, religious rituals, festivals, and concerts. In contemporary society, taiko has also become a powerful voice in social movements for minority groups in Japan and abroad.

Kumi-daiko, the ensemble style featuring multiple drum types, was pioneered in 1951 by Daihachi Oguchi and later popularized by groups like Kodo. Distinct regional styles, such as hachijō-daiko, have also arisen within specific Japanese communities. Today, kumi-daiko groups are active worldwide, including in the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Taiko performance blends technical elements like rhythm, form, stick grips, attire, and specific instrumentation. Ensembles often use various barrel-shaped nagadō-daiko alongside smaller shime-daiko. Many groups enrich the powerful drumming with vocals, string, and woodwind accompaniment.
