Avowed Director Wants To Do More With The World They Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Avowed has enjoyed a successful release, with both Microsoft and Obsidian pleased with its sales performance. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the game's universe. While no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed a strong desire to continue developing the world they've created. "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," she said.
Changes in Avowed During Development
The development of Avowed was fraught with challenges and significant shifts. Patel described the journey as "messy," yet ultimately rewarding. The project, which began in 2018, saw Obsidian navigating the complexities of independence before its acquisition by Microsoft in 2020. The game's direction changed several times, including the decision to abandon multiplayer features and other functionalities. A leadership change in January 2021 led to a reboot under Patel's direction, focusing on a tighter narrative and replacing the open world with open zones to enhance storytelling and gameplay.
Patel shared her insights on managing such a large project: "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." Despite the challenges, she emphasized the importance of the team's focus on the rich lore of the Pillars of Eternity franchise. "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together," she reflected.
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is now eyeing a new project: Pillars of Eternity Tactics. In a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, shared the studio's interest in this tactical game. "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games," Sawyer noted. However, he also highlighted the challenges in defining the game's scope, including team size and visual quality.
Despite this interest, Sawyer remains committed to his vision for a third Pillars of Eternity game, but with a significantly larger budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, at around $100 million.
