Remedy’s FBC: Firebreak, the free-to-play spin-off of Control, has reached a major milestone with over one million players joining the fray. Available at no extra cost to Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus subscribers, the cooperative shooter has made a strong start, prompting the studio to express gratitude and excitement for the journey ahead.
“As of last night, we have surpassed 1 million players in FBC: Firebreak. This is a significant milestone, so thank you for playing from all of us at Remedy,” the team shared in a social media [ttpp] post.
“We know there is still a lot of work ahead of us, and we are super-motivated about it. We have a lot of exciting things cooking for Firebreak players! More about that soon.”
Last week, the developers addressed concerns about the game’s early experience, acknowledging that “the first hour experience” fell short of expectations. In a candid update, they pointed to a mix of issues—confusing onboarding, under-explained mechanics, and unclear objectives in Jobs—that made the initial gameplay less engaging than intended. They also admitted that the starting weapons lack impact, weakening the power fantasy, and that progressing to higher-tier gear involves excessive grinding.
Despite these challenges, IGN’s ongoing review of FBC: Firebreak highlights the game’s potential: “Right now, despite how sparse the story can seem in moments, there’s a lot of fun to be had wrangling erratic monsters in Remedy’s spectacularly absurd bureaucratic setting. I’ll be playing more this week and wrap up this review as soon as I’ve tested the limits of Remedy’s chaotic cooperative job simulator.”
Looking ahead, Remedy has confirmed a robust post-launch roadmap. Two new Jobs (missions) are scheduled for release in 2025, with additional content planned for 2026. All new gameplay content will be free for everyone. While cosmetic purchases will be available, they will not influence gameplay, and the studio has ruled out limited-time rotations or mandatory daily log-ins.
This momentum comes as Remedy juggles multiple high-profile projects. Alongside FBC: Firebreak, the studio is developing Control 2 and a remake compilation of Max Payne and Max Payne 2, keeping fans of narrative-driven, action-packed experiences well-anticipated.
