Back in early April, fans of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing about the mention of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages. However, this information was soon removed, leaving many to wonder about its validity. Nintendo has now clarified the situation in a statement to NintendoLife, revealing that the Nintendo Switch 2 does indeed support VRR, but only in handheld mode. The company acknowledged the initial error on its website and apologized for any confusion caused.
When questioned about potential VRR support in docked mode via a future firmware update, Nintendo remained non-committal, stating they have "nothing to announce on this topic." This means that, at launch, players using the Switch 2 connected to a TV will not benefit from VRR technology.
The clarification comes after weeks of speculation, sparked by the initial mention and subsequent removal of VRR from various informational pages, as tracked by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie. While the absence of VRR in docked mode at launch might be disappointing, there's still hope for future updates. After all, Sony rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles post-launch, setting a precedent that Nintendo could follow.
In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, the company has announced a lineup of games that will receive free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has reassured fans that there will be sufficient Switch 2 units available to meet demand "through the holidays."
