Kojima Eyes Film Direction After Completing PlayStation Game Physint in 5-6 Years

by Jonathan May 20,2025

Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, Physint, is still a significant time away from its release, with Kojima estimating another "five or six years" before fans can get their hands on it. This timeline was shared by Kojima during an interview with Le Film Francais, where he also touched on his ambitions to direct a movie, aspirations that remain on hold until Physint is completed.

Since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015, Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop games at his independent studio. As translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX, Kojima mentioned, "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years." He expressed a desire to possibly direct a film after Physint, viewing it as a homage to the cinema he grew up with, and noted, "I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"

Physint was first announced by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in January 2024. Although details have been scarce since then, Kojima initially hinted that it would also be a movie but later clarified on X/Twitter that the project would represent a new level of 'Digital Entertainment,' encompassing elements traditionally associated with movies.

In addition to Physint, Kojima Productions is juggling several other projects. Death Stranding 2 is slated for release on June 26, and there's OD, a new IP developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Moreover, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding, with actor Norman Reedus confirming in an IGN interview that he would reprise his role in the movie.

Kojima's creative output continues to expand, as he recently shared insights into abandoned game concepts, including a unique 'Forgetting Game' where the protagonist loses important information and abilities if players take extended breaks. In a poignant move, Kojima disclosed last week that he has left a USB stick filled with game ideas for his staff to explore after his passing, ensuring his innovative spirit lives on.
