Space Marine 2 Devs Embrace Modders: Tau, Necrons, and a Surprise Fishing Mini-Game Added

by Carter May 26,2025

Fans of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are thrilled as the game's developer, Saber Interactive, has opened up the floodgates for modders by releasing its internal editor, the Integration Studio. This move has sparked optimism that the game could emulate the longevity of Skyrim through user-generated content. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced this significant step on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, calling it "our biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community."

With the release of the Integration Studio, modders now have the same tools used by the developers for gameplay development. This first release allows them to manipulate level scenarios, game modes, AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, user interfaces, HUD elements, and more, making modding for Space Marine 2 more efficient and accessible.

Grigorenko emphasized the studio's commitment to the modding community, stating, "Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming."

To kickstart the modding frenzy, Grigorenko shared humorous concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, featuring Marneus Calgar, leader of the Ultramarines chapter, hinting at the possibilities now open to modders.

I spoke with Tom, also known as Warhammer Workshop, the creator of the Space Marine 2’s excellent Astartes Overhaul mod, to learn about the community's plans. Tom, who recently released a mod enabling 12-player co-op in Space Marine 2, now has access to all scripting tools that control mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities. He envisions possibilities like a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and progressively face tougher enemies, with chances to gain weapons and health upon defeating foes.

While a new cinematic campaign, particularly a Chaos campaign, is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes is challenging without access to the necessary animation tools. However, he is planning to introduce new factions such as the Tau and Necrons, utilizing available rigs that fit these factions. Meanwhile, the community is racing to develop the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game mod as a fun challenge.

The reaction from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the game being well-received and one of the best-selling Warhammer video games, its official content is limited to three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. With the modding tools now available, players can expand the game's roster, including factions like the Necrons, which were teased in the campaign.

Redditor Mortwight commented, "This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim," highlighting the potential for long-term engagement through modding.

This development is particularly noteworthy as Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment have announced that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 is in development. While some fans are concerned about the impact on potential DLC for Space Marine 2, both companies have reassured that they are not abandoning the game. With modders now equipped with the editor, the future looks bright for Space Marine 2.
