Xbox CEO Phil Spencer Reflects on Past Mistakes and Future Plans
In a recent interview at PAX West 2024, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer discussed key moments in his career, acknowledging past missed opportunities and difficult decisions. He openly addressed some of Xbox's biggest regrets, including passing on major franchises like Bungie's Destiny and Harmonix's Guitar Hero.
Spencer, who joined Xbox when Bungie was a Microsoft studio, shared his initial hesitation with Destiny, only appreciating its potential after the release of House of Wolves. Similarly, he admitted to initially doubting Guitar Hero's success. He acknowledged these choices as among the worst of his career.
Despite these setbacks, Spencer emphasized his forward-looking approach, focusing on future projects rather than dwelling on the past. Xbox is actively pursuing new partnerships and ambitious titles.
One notable upcoming title is Dune: Awakening, an action RPG developed by Funcom. While slated for release on Xbox Series S, along with PC and PS5, Funcom's chief product officer, Scott Junior, mentioned challenges optimizing the game for the Series S. However, he confirmed that the game will still perform well on lower-spec hardware.
Further complicating matters, the indie title Entoria: The Last Song from Jyamma Games faced significant delays on Xbox due to a lack of communication and response from Microsoft. The game's Xbox release remains uncertain, despite being reportedly ready for both Series S and X. Jyamma Games CEO Jacky Greco expressed considerable frustration over the situation.
The situation highlights both the challenges and opportunities in the evolving gaming landscape, with Xbox navigating both major franchise acquisitions and the complexities of supporting a diverse range of game developers and hardware.
