Following the success of *Ghost of Tsushima*, the studio sets its sights on Hokkaido—known in the game as Ezo—a location that blends natural beauty with an undercurrent of danger, making it the perfect backdrop for protagonist Atsu’s journey of vengeance.

Bringing Authenticity to a Fictional World

Recreating real-world locations is no small feat, but Sucker Punch has proven its ability to do so with depth and respect. The team previously captured the spirit of Tsushima Island with such accuracy that they were honored as ambassadors by the island's local government. This dedication to authenticity is now being extended to *Ghost of Yōtei*, where the fictionalized version of 17th-century Hokkaido plays a central role in shaping the narrative.

In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Game Director Nate Fox explained how Hokkaido offered the ideal setting for the game’s themes. “It was unbelievably beautiful and in 1603 it was the edge of the Japanese empire,” he said. The isolation and untamed nature of the region helped frame Atsu’s personal story, giving players a vivid sense of place and purpose. As Fox noted, “If you’re going to tell a ghost story, do it in a dramatic location.”

To better understand the essence of Hokkaido, the development team made two research trips to Japan. One of the highlights was Shiretoko National Park, a place where serene landscapes are juxtaposed with the raw power of nature. This duality of tranquility and threat became a core design principle for the game’s atmosphere.

“A perfect marriage of beauty and danger—that was the exact feeling we wanted for our game,” Fox shared. “For me, that was the moment I knew Hokkaido was the right choice.” This thematic contrast not only enriches the visual experience but also deepens the emotional stakes of Atsu’s journey.

Another key stop during their visit was Mt. Yōtei, known to the Ainu people as “Machineshir,” or “the Female Mountain.” Revered for centuries by the indigenous Ainu, the mountain symbolizes both spiritual significance and personal loss for Atsu. This cultural layer adds richness to the game world, grounding its fiction in historical and emotional truth.

According to Fox, the time spent in Hokkaido was invaluable. Immersing themselves in local traditions and listening to stories from residents gave the developers a deeper appreciation for the land and its people. “This trip was fulfilling,” he said, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with representing another culture through a foreign lens.
