Ghost of Yotei promises to offer the most expansive maps and unparalleled freedom in gameplay from Sucker Punch. Dive deeper into the game's new features and its rich portrayal of Japanese culture.
Ghost of Yotei: New Details Revealed
Freedom to Hunt the Yotei Six
In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting details about their upcoming standalone sequel in the Ghost series. Ghost of Yotei builds upon the success of Ghost of Tsushima, enhancing both gameplay and narrative depth.
Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted that the game will feature the most freedom in gameplay and the largest maps ever created by the studio. He emphasized, "Rather than guiding players linearly, we allow them to discover the Yotei Six's locations independently and choose how they wish to avenge them."
Last week, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei and released a new trailer, "The Onryō’s List," which gave fans a glimpse into the story and gameplay. The trailer introduced protagonist Atsu and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.
More Melee Weapons
Exploration isn't the only area where Ghost of Yotei offers more freedom; players will also have a broader range of melee weapons at their disposal. The latest trailer sparked speculation about new weapons, which Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the interview. In addition to the traditional samurai sword, players can wield an odachi, a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.
Fox stressed that while the sword remains the core weapon, players can learn to use other weapons from various teachers and masters encountered in the game's story and open world.
Unlike its predecessor, where the samurai's honor was central to the narrative, Atsu's story does not revolve around this theme, as she isn't considered a samurai. This allows her to adopt a more flexible fighting style, utilizing whatever weapons are available on the battlefield. Fox noted, "Atsu can pick up and throw weapons dropped by defeated enemies, though this is limited to certain types."
Ezo as the Setting
Set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), Ghost of Yotei captures the essence of a lawless yet beautiful wilderness. Cornell described it as "a stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature."
The game will also feature the Ainu culture and its people, indigenous to northern Japan. The developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with experts to ensure an authentic portrayal. Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning landscapes, motivating the team to recreate this setting for players worldwide.
Ghost of Tsushima was celebrated for its accurate depiction of Japanese culture and history, and Sucker Punch aims to maintain this standard with Ghost of Yotei, highlighting the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."
Ghost of Yōtei is set to launch on October 2, 2025, exclusively on the PlayStation 5. Stay updated with the latest news by checking out our article below!
